Team Hoot headed downtown Nashville last weekend to visit The Goo Goo Cluster Shop and Dessert Bar, and what a treat it was! For those of you who don't know, a Goo Goo Cluster is a round mound of luscious caramel, creamy marshmallow nougat, fresh roasted peanuts, and real milk chocolate - in other words, absolutely DELICIOUS. Known as the world's first ever combination candy bar, it was created in 1912 in a copper kettle at the Standard Candy Company in Nashville, TN. It has grown to become a rich Nashville (and southern) tradition, for anyone that visits Music City and tastes one is immediately hooked on the sweet treat.
Luckily for us Nashvillians and all of the city's visitors, Goo Goo has a shop located just steps off of Broadway. Along with branded merchandise, bulk retro candies, and Nashville themed gifts, guests can even watch Goo Goos being made by hand in a glass encased kitchen. Or, better yet, guests can make a Goo Goo themselves with a hands-on chocolate class! Team Hoot took part in the Secrets of Goo Goo class to bring you the scoop on this fun Nashville experience.
We were greeted with official red and white aprons, four chocolate buttons, and a wine tasting station complete with Arrington Vineyards wines. Our instructor gave us a brief history of Goo Goo, and then we got to work testing out the delicious chocolate button/wine pairings. At Hootenanni, we love a good wine tasting... but it's even better when the wine tasting comes with CHOCOLATE. Everyone in the class agreed we could have eaten 100 buttons!
Next, we learned how the famous Goo Goo Clusters are made and began to create our own. There were multiple sticky fillings to choose from, from peanut butter to salted caramel, and lots of hard fillings to toss in including peanuts, pretzels, Oreos, and more.
While we waited for the pastry chef to top our Goo Goos with more milk chocolate, we started on the next dessert: a brownie topped with the most delectable peanut butter icing we've ever tasted. We had the chance to make and mix the icing ourselves, but we won't give too much info away since it's one of Goo Goo's "secret" recipes ;) We will say this though - you will never look at a jar of JIF or Skippy's the same after tasting this peanut butter.
The best part of it all was getting to take our creations home (but let's be real, they were all eaten on the car ride home) AND the 15% off discount for any purchases made in the store that day. Those chocolate buttons from the wine pairing? Yep, they sell those in the store too. We may or may not have bought 100 each to take home.
If you're interested in reserving a spot in a Goo Goo chocolate class for your bachelorette party, let us know and we'll be happy to set it up for you!
